This 20,600-acre lake is known as Virginia’s premier fishing destination and has hosted the ESPN Bassmaster Elite Series, a professional bass fishing tournament, for several years. As such, private docks and marinas can be found throughout the lake.

Smith Mountain Lake, or SML as we locals call it, offers family-friendly activities year-round. Here’s what you can do with your family this weekend:

Boating

Getting out on the water is the best way to explore the lake. There are several marinas in SML that offer dockage and slips, including:

• Bridgewater Marina
• Crazy Horse Marina
• Gills Creek Marina
• Mitchell’s Point Marina
• Parkway Marina

These marinas offer repair and maintenance services, along with lodging and waterfront dining. Annual events, such as the highly anticipated boat show and cardboard boat regatta, take place here throughout the year. You’ll also find recreational vehicle (RV) parks in and around SML for your convenience.

Don’t have your own boat? Rent one from any of the marinas mentioned above.

Fishing

SML is a renowned fishing spot. Bring some rods and spend the day fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Electrofishing surveys have found that largemouth bass in SML can weigh up to two to four pounds, depending on the season. Drop your bait in the coves for a chance to catch these beauties – shallower waters and low boating traffic will work to your advantage.The highest concentration of largemouth bass can be found upstream, as you go further away from the dam. Smallmouth bass can be found in the reservoir’s lower portion.Other sport species include catfish and sunfish.

Wakeboarding

If you’re feeling more adventurous than usual, try wakeboarding. One of SML’s most popular water activities, wakeboarding enthusiasts will enjoy the lake, which hosts amateur and professional competitions. Still learning to wakeboard? The Smith Mountain Wake Company offers age-appropriate lessons to kids and adults alike.

Kayaking

For something more laid-back, try kayaking. It’s a low-key workout that helps you burn calories and build muscle strength. Admire views of the surrounding mountains as you paddle out into the water.There are numerous kayak rentals in SML, some of which offer discounts if you visit during off-season. Crazy Horse Marina, for one, offers kayak rentals, in addition to tubes, floats, and slides.

Hiking

Off-season

Owning a lakefront home is a rare privilege. Keep your prized investment in excellent shape with these maintenance tips:

Clear out gutters

Prevent debris build-up by clearing out your gutters at least twice a year. This keeps them from clogging up. This also prevents leaks – excess water that overflows from the gutters can cause foundation and landscape damage in the long run. Debris can also become a habitat for pests, attracting everything from ants to rodents, especially when moist. Build-up can be the source of infestations that not only damage your property, but are also costly to treat.

Landscape your shoreline

The shoreline also needs tending to – watch for signs of erosion, as well as damage to plants, barriers, and masonry, especially during and after winter. Clear away any trash or debris to maintain cleanliness. Add a pop of color by bringing in some potted plants. When it comes to lakefront properties, a native shoreline slows down the effects of erosion with the presence of native plants and grass. However, this kind of shoreline also requires a bit of maintenance, often in the form of weed-pulling.

Maintain deck furniture

Old or damaged furniture not only puts you and your guests in danger, they can also be an eyesore. Have them repaired, give them a new coat of paint, or get them upholstered as needed. You might also have to replace them altogether if the cost of the repairs is roughly the same. You’ll also have to place furniture in storage in the winter, or when the property sits unoccupied.
