    A BRIEF HISTORY

    The Lake’s history began in 1960 when the Appalachian Power Company built a dam on the Roanoke River to generate electrical power. The dam was completed in 1963, and some surrounding land was donated to create the State Park. The state of Virginia bought the land and opened the park to the public in 1983. Visit the visitor center at the dam and see hands-on exhibits and audio-visuals about how the Lake was formed. 

    BEST SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE HIKING TRAILS

    Smith Mountain Lake trails typically range from half a mile to about three miles long. For the most part, these trails can be taken on by families and are dog-friendly, provided you keep them on a leash. However, if you’re looking for a stiffer challenge, there are many in the area. Most of the trails loop across the park, but on any path you choose, you’ll be greeted by stunning views, local wildlife, and fauna. 

    Here’s a quick list of some of the best Smith Mountain Lake hiking trails:

    Beachwood Trail

    This popular and easy loop winds around the Smith Mountain Lake State Park campground. It is framed by a hardwood forest that features mostly American Beech trees. A great reward in this 2.3 km loop is the Alice Maxey home on top of a hill that used to look over a tobacco barn.

    Chestnut Ridge Trail

    The Chestnut Ridge Trail is a 5.4-mile multi-use loop used by hikers and mountain bikers. The trail offers some picture-perfect spots. Take a break on the wooden benches along the way and admire the stunning scenery around you. This lovely hike showcases terrific views of the Lake and its surrounding landscape. 

    The Chestnut Ridge Trail is a moderate trail on the Blue Ridge Parkway and one of Roanoke Valley’s most popular trails.

    Buck Run Trail

    Travel along a finger of the Lake in this 5 km back-and-forth moderate trail. One of the best aspects of this trail is that it connects to other trails, allowing longer hikes. The views on this trail are spectacular and open to mountain bikers. 

    Lakeview Trail

    This family-friendly trail is one of the shorter trails at just 0.3 miles. It encircles the Discovery Center and offers the clearest panoramic views of the Lake’s main “S” curve. Along the path,  there are interpretive signs that detail the life of ospreys, so you can make it a discovery walk for the kids. The trail also includes a sighting of an osprey nest platform, where you can observe osprey between March and early September.

    Turtle Island Trail

    This 1.4-mile trail is another popular trail among locals and guests and is located near the entrance of the Chestnut Ridge Trail. The trail crosses a bridge to Turtle Island which is abundant with flora and fauna. Nearby you will find a small bird blind for wildlife observations. 

    It’s a moderately easy trail with an interpretive loop with some elevation changes. 

    Osprey Point Trail

    This Smith Mountain Lake hiking trail is a moderately difficult hike. It’s 0.4 miles long and travels along a peninsula near Moody Meeting House Historical Site. This rock-strewn path offers great views of both the Lake and the massive rock formations of Moneta Gneiss. The trail features a stone fence built in the early 1800s, and hikers can see where the rock was harvested to create the wall. 

    In addition to all these outdoor activities, Smith Mountain Lake hosts several festivals and events all year round. During the autumn, visitors can time their stay to coincide with the weekend-long Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival, which features excellent live music, artisan vendors, superb spirits, beer, cider, and wine. Similarly, the Antique and Classic Boat Show and Festival focuses on restored antique boats, and the Fall Chili Festival features a chili cook-off.

    Hiking is a great way to spend the day and rediscover the beauty of the great outdoors at a pace that’s comfortable for you. With some foresight and planning, you can have a great Smith Mountain Lake hiking trail experience that will reinvigorate both body and mind. Here are some tips that will not only keep you safe but also maximize your hikes. 

    When to Visit Smith Mountain Lake

    Smith Mountain Lake State and Community Parks are open year-round, but the trails are best between March and November, specifically around fall. During this time there’s less humidity and clearer skies and you can catch views of the natural surroundings in all their splendour.  

    Come October, Smith Mountain Lake’s trees burst into a rainbow of spectacular colors that cover the region in vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and red. Unlike visiting during the summer and before Labor Day, when the lake and parks are used by more people, in autumn, you’ll have a more private experience. 

    What to Bring

    Experienced hikers will already be well prepared before they venture out. However, for those less experienced we provide a list of what you may want to bring along. Note that you may not need all these items, depending on the difficulty and length of the trail.

State Park information is readily available and indicates the unique features of the trail so you know what you’ll be encountering. Will there be an opening leading to the lake, or is there a peak that gives you spectacular views? Will you want to take a short break or a longer one, and if so, would it be a good idea to have a picnic?
    • Time of day and length of trail: Easy trails typically take one to two hours, so consider the heat, the park hours, and the rest of your schedule.
    • Time of the year: When are you planning to head to Smith Mountain Lake? The season and subsequent weather can affect the time you plan to hike and the conditions in which you’ll be hiking. Note that Smith Mountain Lake is open year-round. If you are hiking in the winter, carefully consider the time of day and the weather patterns to avoid getting caught in the dark or a strong snowfall.
    • Physical fitness: Try to be as objective as you can when assessing your own personal fitness level. Though hiking is generally a pleasant activity, it does present some level of challenge, especially when there are steep elevations.
    • Health first: Ensure you take any necessary medication with you, and if you have health concerns, seek your doctor’s clearance before heading out.
    • Hydrate and eat: Before engaging in any activity, make sure you’re well hydrated, and you’ve taken adequate food that will give you enough energy for the hike.

    Outdoor Tips and Safety Reminders

    The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has created a safety guide for hikers and we’ve listed the most pertinent for you here:

    1. Check a weather app and pack and prepare for forecasted weather.
    2. Bring and apply sunscreen, even when it seems there is no need.
    3. Carry a small first aid kit, and keep a larger, complete kit in your car or campsite.
    4. Bring a water bottle and fill it with water instead of other drinks that may not hydrate you as well as water, such as coffee or sodas.
    5. Carry a whistle, and your phone (with a full charge or power bank as necessary) at all times in case of emergencies, and keep emergency numbers and information on you before you hike. 
    6. Know your trail and have a physical or e-copy of the map.
    7. Wear sleeves to protect your arms and make sure to tuck your pants into socks when hiking. This will protect you from most bugs and other wildlife.
    8. Keep your pets on a leash. If hiking with children, plan according to their endurance level and bring essential items they may need. 
    9. Only light campfires in designated fire rings. 
    10. Bring flashlights and glowsticks. 
    11. Stay on the trail. Going off-trail can damage the trail’s surrounding ecosystem. It also ensures you’re on a safe path.
    12. Keep snacks, water, and an emergency blanket in your pack.
    13. Tell friends and family about your outdoor activities, route, dates, and expected return.

    • Declining home sales. February 2023 yielded 6,505 total home sales, which was 20% less than the number of sales a year ago. Homes that sold at $600,001 to $800,000 accounted for 11%, and those in the above $800,000 made up 9%.
    • Consistent price growth. Despite slow sales, the statewide median sales price – $370,000 – increased by 6% compared to the same time in 2022, which indicates tight inventory conditions in some markets. For example, certain areas in Central Virginia, New River Valley, and Southside Region have seen double-digit median price growth.
    • High demand for luxury properties. While sellers have been receiving less than their asking price on average, homes in the luxury segment of the market – properties that sold within the $600,001 to $800,000 range and over $800,000 –  had the highest sold-to-list price ratio at 100.3% and 100.4%, respectively.
    • A more buyer-friendly market. In February 2023, the average days on market for homes for sale in Virginia was 38 days, which is 8 days longer compared to the previous year. This is great news for buyers, since it offers them more time to choose a home, get inspections, or accomplish other contingencies that were difficult to do during the feverish housing market of the past few years.
    • Inventory is slowly recuperating. 8,334 new listings were recorded in February 2023 which was 22% less than the number of new listings during the same month in 2022. Moreover, compared to January 2023, new listings only showed a 2% increase, which is indicative of seller hesitation given the steady decline in sales. In terms of active listings, however, the Virginia real estate market had close to 20% more listings year-over-year. With homes staying on the market longer, the inventory of active listings began increasing substantially since the fall of 2022. Despite this improvement, inventory is still at historically low levels.

    While the luxury real estate market tends to be relatively unaffected by major trends in the broader market, it’s wise to stay abreast of current trends when planning future investments. Buyers looking to invest in Smith Mountain Lake luxury properties should still prepare to act quickly and decisively despite the ease in competition, since great homes don’t stay long on the market. Sellers, on the other hand, should be more mindful of how they price their homes so that they can sell quickly and for top dollar.

    You can also rent luxury pontoons, wake boats, and personal watercraft like jet skis or Sea-Doos that are good for up to three passengers. To go sightseeing, go on a lunch or dinner excursion aboard the Virginia Dare.

    Go fishing

    Are you an angler planning to make Smith Mountain Lake your home?  Then, obtain your fishing license at the local Department of Wildlife Resources. The local DWR regularly stocks the lake with striped bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and blackmouth bass. The lake itself has other fish like crappies, catfish muskellunge, and walleyes.     Golf

    Smith Mountain Lake has three 18-hole courses, each with its own distinct architecture, stunning lake views, and high-end amenities.

    • Mariner’s Landing Golf Club

      Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the golf course at Mariner’s Landing is open to the public and offers stunning views of the lake. The course also features a restaurant called Bruno’s Clubhouse Bistro which offers a wide variety of cuisines.

    • Copper Cove Golf Club (Previously Westlake Golf and Country Club)

      Golfers from all levels are welcome at Copper Cove Country Club. The course features both scenic and challenging holes with views of the lake. The course was designed by Russell Breeden and also features a bar and grill.

    • The Waterfront Country Club

      The Waterfront Country Club is the oldest private club in Smith Mountain Lake. Located near Westlake Corner, the course features beautiful Zoysia grass fairways, fine dining, and events. The place also has swimming pools, tennis and pickleball courts, and a fitness facility.

    Hiking

    There are many other ways to get in touch with nature at Smith Mountain Lake. Visit the many parks. Hike the numerous trails, most of which allow pet dogs as long as they’re leashed.

    • Smith Mountain Lake State Park

      The Smith Mountain Lake State Park has seven hiking trails with varying lengths and  levels of difficulty. Four easy trails range from 1.2 miles to 2.8 miles. The park is open every day, from 8:30 a.m. till dusk.

    • Smith Mountain Lake Community Park

      Spread across 37 acres on the Franklin County side of the lake, the Smith Mountain Lake Community Park is open year-round,  from dawn till dusk every day. It features a park 2-mile hike trail, fishing pier, playground, and beach area. Dogs are allowed on the trail but not on the beach.

    • Smith Mountain Lake Cooperative Wildlife Trail and Management Area

      There are multiple hiking trails in the area, and you’ll be able to trek on either side of the Smith Mountain Dam. The area is also used for hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching.

    Spring

    If your family is into sporting events, they’ll love the Smith Mountain Lake triathlon (May), the Tom Maynard Memorial Poker Run (third weekend of May), and the SML Golf Invitational. Spring is also a great time to visit historic sites like the Booker T. National Monument 17 miles outside Smith Mountain Lake (and site of the 2023 Juneteenth Celebration) and sample the local food, beer, and wine scene with special discounts during the SML Restaurant Week in April.

    In partnership with the Smith Mountain Lake Association and the Tri-County Lakes Administrative Commission, the local Chamber of Commerce also organizes a clean-up drive in May.

    Summer

    One of the best community activities during summer is the Smith Mountain Lake Pirate Days, a weekend in July filled with pirate-themed festivities in and around the lake. During this weekend, the Chamber of Commerce hosts a family-oriented pancake breakfast, with activities such as balloon animals and face painting.

    You can also save the dates to the fundraiser, Beastlake 5K & Obstacle Course (July 1) and the 4th of July celebrations and fireworks.

    Fall

    Even when the weather cools, the festivities remain red hot  beginning with the Smith Mountain Lake Antique and Classic Boat Show (September), SML’s Annual Wine Festival (September), a tour of eight spectacular waterfront homes during the  Charity Home Tour (October), and the outdoor music festival called Knot-a-Festival.

    The annual Chili Festival, happening every first Saturday of November, is not to be missed. Dozens of vendors line up at the Bridgewater Plaza and a team of judges gets to decide who deserves the title “Best Chili.” Fall festivities are capped off during Thanksgiving weekend, when Santa Claus arrives by boat at the Bridgewater Plaza and officially starts the holiday season at the lake.

    Winter

    Despite the laidback vibe at Smith Mountain Lake during winter, community events and festivities are in full swing, such as the Dickens of a Christmas, Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, and the annual Christmas Parade. Keep checking their individual websites or Facebook pages for announcements of the final schedule.

    Accessibility

    Accessibility is not a problem at Smith Mountain Lake. In fact, traffic is fairly light in the area. You can drive to Smith Mountain Lake, thanks to State Routes 24, 116, and 40. State Route 122 is the only major highway that crosses the lake. You can fly in from another state and disembark at the nearby Smith Mountain Lake Airport, Lynchburg Regional Airport, or the Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport.

    Amenities and utilities

    There are several public libraries in the area like the Franklin County, Bedford County, and Pittsylvania County Public Libraries. Medical facilities include the Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital, Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital, and the LewisGale Physicians at Westlake.

    There are places of worship for Baptists, Catholics, Episcopalians, Orthodox Christians, Methodists, and more. Synagogues and mosques are within driving distance of Smith Mountain Lake.

    With multiple internet service providers in the area, it’s advisable to shop around for the best deals and fastest connections.  Cell phone reception is good in most areas of the lake, but may be spotty in others.

      Mariner’s Landing is a 1,000-acre community and country club in Smith Mountain Lake. The community provides a wide range of properties for sale, such as single-family homes, townhomes, and condominium units. There are also several empty lots ready to be developed into your dream home.

      The area was originally farmland until it was purchased by Jim Wray. The community and the golf course were built in the 1980s. Both were designed by the well-known team of Lewis Clark, Robert Trent Jones Sr., and Joe Sonderman. The property changed hands again in the early 1990s, at which time it  was called Mariners Landing.

      Rental accommodations and high-end resort amenities were also built on the property. In 2020, the community was purchased by and put under the stewardship of commercial developers Waller Perrow and Tom Branch. Since then, even more improvements were added, including the remodeling of the fitness center, clubhouse, and pro shop.

    2. The Waterfront

      The Waterfront is a luxury private community sprawled across 750 acres and boasting 8.5 miles of shoreline. Properties available for sale in the community include custom-built single-family homes, townhomes, and condominiums at different price points. Single-family homes at The Waterfront typically have multiple beds and baths, multiple car garages and parking spaces, and covered decks. Townhomes and condominiums have similar features. If you want to build your own dream house, there are lots for sale as well.

      The Waterfront features a 22,000-square-foot clubhouse with a fitness center, pro shop, and bar room lounge. The community also has its own golf course designed by George Dillon, a PGA golf professional, and features two outdoor tennis courts and a Junior Olympic swimming pool.

    3. The Town of Moneta

      Moneta is one of the many unincorporated communities overlooking Smith Mountain Lake. It is located on both sides of the lake – in Bedford and Franklin Counties. You can find an even wider selection of homes in different sizes and styles in this area. For example, you can purchase a 3-bed, 2-bath, 1,725-square-foot house on a lot that’s a little over an acre for $229,500. Or, if you want more space for your family, there’s a 4-bed, 3-bath, 2,160-square-foot home with a similar lot size as well. Available condominiums in Moneta include a 1,175-square-foot unit with 2 beds and 2 baths for under $230,000.

      Single-family homes in Moneta are typically Colonial in style and feature beautiful brickwork. You’ll also find townhomes and waterfront properties in this area.
